A couple of catastrophes

Here a couple of real disasters from recent Canberra club tournaments. Both games have been played a number of times before, but clearly the losing players were still caught by surprise. BTW I have left out the names of the players involved to spare their feelings, but as I am pretty sure they all read this blog, they at least know who they are.

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.g3 Bc5 (D)
5.Nxe5?? Nxe5 6.d4 Bxd4 7.Qxd4 Nf3+ 0-1

1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5 Ne4 3.Bf4 g5 4.Be5 f6 5.e3 fxe5?? 6.Qh5# 1-0

The second game is a Tromp (aka the Tropowsky)-I play it and like it. Respects to the losers...

The second can be a good example to teach beginners, way much better than the unrealistic "fool's mate".
