2014 Olympiad Day 7 - Two big wins

Day 7 of the 2014 Chess Olympiad saw two results which stopped me in my tracks. The first was Russia losing 1-3 to the Czech Republic. Grischuk and Svidler lost to Navara and Lanicka, and the 16th seed held the top seed t draws on the bottom two boards. This has severly dented the Russian teams chance of winning the tournament as they are now 3 points behind the leaders (Azerbaijan) with 4 rounds to go.
The other result was the 3.5-0.5 demolition of Mexico by the Australian team. The Mexicans had a rating edge on each board, but Smerdon drew on the top board and Ly, Ikeda and Smirnov all won. The win for Smirnov may also be enough to push his rating past the 2400 mark, which he needs to do to receive an IM title (subject to confirmation).
The Australian Women's team also had a good result, beating England 2.5-1.5.Again this was an underdog victory, as the English were seeded 12 places above the Australians.

Not quite yet. He's up to 2390 or thereabouts.

Hi Shaun

I noticed my previous post that said that Anton's live rating had not yet reached 2400 didn't stick.

I've added 2334 (August rating) + 27.8 (politiken) + 30.6 (olympiad r7) = 2392.4

Did he participate in another tournament to pick up another 8 points or more?

In fact that's wrong, it's 2334 + 28.2 + 28.35 = 2390.5 after r10 at Tromso.

Chess-results.com have been using a K factor of 20 instead of 15 to calculate Smirnov's TPR at the Olympiad, inflating his rating gain by 10 points.

He can only gain the 2400 rating if he beats his 2600+ opponent in the last round.

Unless of course, he has picked 5 points somewhere else besides Politiken and Tromso in the last few weeks and draws his last round game.

Wrong on both counts! The rating formula changed the K factor to 20 last month. Shame FIDE hasn't updated its online calculator.

Wrong again. K=20 since 1 July 2014. Back to the drawing board.
