Karpov gains steam

I know I've just mentioned the upcoming FIDE elections, but there have been a number of interesting developments in recent days.
Firstly the Russian Chess Federation (or parts of it) have reversed a decision by its Chairman to nominate Ilyumzhinov, and have instead nominated former World Champion Anatoly Karpov. However to circumvent this the Chairman, Arkady Dvorkovich, refused to attend the meeting and attempted to hold a parallel meeting elsewhere in the same venue. The upshot it appears that both meeting may have been illegal, and who the Russian Chess Federation will officially support is now up in the air.
The second important development is the announcement from Ignatius Leong that he is standing down as FIDE General Secretary at the end of his current term. Whether this is is simply a personal decision, or part of something bigger, it is too early to stay. But it does indicate that the momentum is moving in Karpov's direction.

  1. I would like a story on what transpired to lead the ACF to formally take legal ownership of the Chess Chat website. Further details are on OzChess.

  2. Is there any indication whom the ACF is (will be?) supporting?

  3. Let me just correct a couple things.
    1) "elsewhere in the same venue" should be replaced with at the same time. It was actually held a few kms away.
    2) Illegal or not is not so clear. My former boss Dvorkovich is claiming that it is illegal. I am sure other people might have different opinions.
    3) I am not yet clear which side Zhukov supports. I have seen different comments in the internet.

  4. As Kevin Bonham has stated on Chesschat the claim that the ACF has taken legal ownership of Chesschat is incorrect.

Then again anything said by Alex Toolsie can be taken with a grain of salt.

  6. Actually Dr Kevin Bonham, Alex Toolsie is correct!

Here is the official record from a WhoIs search on the domain's ownership.

You can verify the results yourself if you like, and then perhaps you should apologize to Alex Toolsie.

WhoIs is the official directory for domain name ownership - and contrary to your unsupported denials (with no evidence backing up what you have said) - the results of the search seem quite clear and do clearly refer to the ACF as being the owner.

  7. Alex Toolsie as usual is wrong.

Todays whois data shows that Karthick remains the owner of the chesschat.org domain

  9. Thanks for that Bill Gletsos.

Alex wasn't wrong at all. You left out the date at the end of your WhoIs search.

This is how it would look if you hadn't forgotten to do that.

So as we can see from the DATE, your search result is from 12 or more hours after Alex Toolsie's search, and the ownership details have clearly changed since then.

But thanks for your contribution. Hope to see you again on Ozchess soon.

  10. Alex Toolsie you are wrong because you claimed that the ownership of chesschat.org had changed.

The ownership of chesschat.org never changed.
It was as Kevin Bonham said a registration error.

Even if it was simply a registration error, the official WhoIs record had listed the ACF as being the official owner of the domain.

As such, there was a good basis for speculation that the ACF had in fact taken ownership over the website.
