So White played 1.c8(Q) and Black duly played Qe1+ followed by Qe5+ and the game ended in draw. It was only in the post mortem that spectators pointed out that White could have played ... what?

f4, then g3 allowing white to interpose the original Queen to avoid the perpetual.
